Oryx Energies inaugurates the Mangapwani LPG terminal in Zanzibar
Oryx Energies has held the grand opening of the Mangapwani LPG Terminal in Zanzibar, the first-ever LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) terminal facility built on the island. The new terminal marks a significant milestone in ensuring a better and more affordable supply of LPG to meet the growing demand in Zanzibar and support the United Republic of Tanzania's Clean Cooking Program. LPG is increasingly becoming a key component of Zanzibar's energy mix, addressing the needs of households, businesses, and the fast-growing tourism sector. The opening event was attended by dignitaries including the H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, as the Guest of Honor, government officials from both Zanzibar and the Mainland Government. Shuwekha Omar Khamis, General Manager of Oryx Gas Zanzibar Limited, stated: “We are proud to inaugurate this state-of-the-art LPG terminal which strengthens LPG supply and distribution to the archipelago. We are determined to continue playing a key role in this development, having long laid the groundwork for expanding LPG distribution in Zanzibar.” Benoît Araman, Managing Director of Oryx Gas Tanzania Limited, commented: “The opening of the Mangapwani LPG Terminal reflects Oryx Energies’ commitment to investing in critical infrastructure that supports the safe and widespread use of LPG in Tanzania. It further meets Government request to ensure a sustainable supply of LPG everywhere in the country.” The Tanzanian LPG market has seen an increase in imports of nearly 13-fold in the last decade, from 20,000 metric tons in 2010 to 293,000 metric tons in 2023.
